Deftones reconnect with producer Terry Date on Ohms, bringing back the collaborator behind Adrenaline, Around the Fur, White Pony and Deftones. The band's ninth studio album pairs Stephen Carpenter's low-tuned guitar work with Chino Moreno's melodic vocals, Abe Cunningham's drums, Frank Delgado's keyboards and samples, and Sergio Vega's bass. Its 10-song sequence is the final Deftones album recorded with Vega. Carpenter also plays a nine-string guitar.
"Genesis" moves from an atmospheric opening into heavy guitars and Moreno's forceful vocal, while "Ceremony" alternates palm-muted riffs with a more spacious chorus. "Urantia" begins with a thrash-influenced guitar passage before shifting toward a lighter verse and melodic refrain. "The Spell of Mathematics" slows the attack with a thick repeating riff, synthesizer accents, and an extended instrumental ending built from guitar, bass, drums, and finger snaps. The title track closes with a driving guitar riff.
Terry Date produced, recorded, engineered, and mixed Ohms, with Howie Weinberg and Will Borza mastering. Chris Bellman cut the lacquers for this black vinyl LP pressing. The record includes a double-sided insert with lyrics, credits, and artwork, and its 10 tracks run from "Genesis" through the closing title song. The album was recorded at Henson Recording Studios and Trainwreck Studios.
