Deftones' eighth studio album arrived on April 8, 2016 as their highest-charting release since their 2003 self-titled album, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200. Produced by Matt Hyde and the band at Megawatt Recording in Studio City and Far From Earth Films in Bend, Oregon, the 11-track collection became their first album to reach number one in both Australia and New Zealand. The album earned critical acclaim with a Metacritic score of 81, based on 26 reviews.
Creative tension between frontman Chino Moreno and guitarist Stephen Carpenter defined the recording process, with Rolling Stone describing it as Moreno playing Morrissey to Carpenter's Meshuggah. Moreno handled most guitar duties on the album, while bassist Sergio Vega employed a six-string bass to push the band into new sonic territory. Singles "Prayers / Triangles," "Doomed User," and "Hearts / Wires" preceded the album's release, with "Phantom Bride" featuring guest guitar from Alice in Chains' Jerry Cantrell.
Critics compared the album's experimental and atmospheric sound to their 2006 release Saturday Night Wrist, noting influences from new wave, post-punk, and space rock. Metal Hammer awarded the album 9 out of 10, while AllMusic praised the band for continuously pushing the boundaries of what metal can be. The album balances aggressive tracks like "Doomed User" with melodic explorations on "Geometric Headdress" and "(L)MIRL."
This limited edition white vinyl pressing includes a gatefold jacket and insert featuring complete lyrics and artwork, delivering an album that Metal Hammer described as a journey of oblique emotional mysticism.
