Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters [Import, Vinyl LP]

Plastic Surgery Disasters, the Dead Kennedys' second full-length, was originally released in November 1982 on Alternative Tentacles, the band's own label, co-released with Faulty Products in the US and Cherry Red Records in the UK. Produced by Thom Wilson, the album followed the band's debut Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables and pushed further into mid-tempo hardcore territory without abandoning the sardonic political commentary that defined the band's identity. Released September 3, 2021 on Audio Platter, catalog PLATE059LP, this UK import pressing brings the album back on 140-gram black vinyl with one addition to the original track sequence.

The 14 listed tracks open with "Advice from Christmas Past," a brief spoken-word piece not included on the original 1982 pressing, before moving into the album's hardcore proper. "Government Flu" and "Terminal Preppie" set the pace early, both under two and a half minutes and built on East Bay Ray's clean, precise guitar lines beneath Jello Biafra's vocal delivery. "Halloween" is the album's longest and most structurally ambitious track at 3:35, shifting between tempos and featuring one of Biafra's more theatrical performances. "Bleed for Me" opens Side Two with a slower, heavier arrangement than most of what precedes it. "Moon Over Marin" closes the listed sequence with a notably restrained guitar figure and a tone that sits well apart from the rest of the album.
