Former Misfits and Samhain frontman Glenn Danzig joined forces with producer Rick Rubin to create something entirely new. Released August 30, 1988 on Rubin's Def American Recordings, Danzig became the band's best-selling album, certified Gold in 1994 and Platinum by the RIAA. Rolling Stone ranked Danzig number 23 on their list of the 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time. The album fused bluesy doom metal with Glenn Danzig's Elvis-meets-Jim Morrison vocals, creating a sound that defied categorization when it hit the charts.
Recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios and Chung King Metal with guitarist John Christ, bassist Eerie Von, and drummer Chuck Biscuits, Danzig opens with the future hit "Twist of Cain." Albert King's "The Hunter" receives a menacing makeover, while "Am I Demon" and "She Rides" showcase the band's dark biblical imagery. "Soul On Fire" delivers mesmerizing vocals over bluesy metal, while "Mother" became a cultural phenomenon five years later with a 1993 remix that hit MTV and radio. Metallica's James Hetfield recorded uncredited backing vocals on "Twist of Cain" and "Possession." The stripped-down production focused on Christ's aggressive guitar work and Danzig's commanding vocal range.
This RSD Essential indie exclusive features opaque white vinyl housed in a gatefold jacket. The iconic skull cover art (drawn by Danzig himself) presents no text, just pure imagery that became synonymous with the band.
