Canadian singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar explores faith, masculinity, and reconciliation with his parents on Son of Spergy, his fourth studio album released through Republic Records. The album takes its title from his father Norwill Simmonds' nickname, "Spergy," a gospel singer who appears on the record. Executively produced by Jordan Evans and fellow Canadian artist Mustafa, the 12-song, 51-minute collection represents a more organic and psychedelic shift from the beat-driven experimentation of 2023's Never Enough. This double LP edition comes in an embossed gatefold jacket with printed sleeves, reflecting the album's intimate, handcrafted approach.

The album opens with "Rain Down" featuring Sampha, a hazy-headed hymn that sets the soul-searching tone. Standout tracks include the openhearted serenade "Have a Baby (With Me)," the upbeat "Call on Me" that pairs crunchy alt-rock guitars and reggae riddims, and the Bon Iver-assisted beauty "Moon," where jazzy piano wafts through dulcet acoustic arrangements. "Touching God" brings Yebba and Blood Orange together as Caesar laments feeling unheard, sliding into the Lord's Prayer with powerful vocal interplay. "Baby Blue" is a beautifully dazed ballad that layers woozy strings, chopped-up vocals, and sound-effect samples with White Album-style wanderlust over six minutes. Additional features include Caesar's brother 646yf4t on "No More Loving (On Women I Don't Love)" and Bon Iver returning for album closer "Sins Of The Father," completing a deeply personal journey through spiritual questioning and family bonds.

This pressing favors folky instrumentation that Caesar weaves to delightfully daydreamy effect, with the double LP format allowing these introspective compositions room to breathe across four sides. The black vinyl captures the album's stripped-down production approach, where Caesar played vocals, bass, guitar, synthesizers, and piano throughout. The embossed gatefold jacket adds tactile elegance to the package, housing printed inner sleeves that complement the album's visual aesthetic. With collaborations spanning indie darlings like Bon Iver and Rex Orange County to R&B luminaries like Blood Orange and Sampha, this is a Toronto R&B artist at his most vulnerable and artistically adventurous.
