My Own Prison is Creed's debut studio album, originally released in 1997. The album was initially issued independently by the band's Blue Collar Records on April 14, 1997, and re-released by Wind-up Records on August 26, 1997. Band manager Jeff Hanson matched Creed with producer John Kurzweg, and the album was recorded for just $6,000. This 2022 pressing marks the first official vinyl release of an album that launched one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Influenced by heavy metal and 1970s stadium rock, the music has been described as grunge, post-grunge, and slightly heavy metal, slightly alternative. The album features four Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock number one singles: "My Own Prison," "Torn," "What's This Life For," and "One." Mark Tremonti's guitar work brings heavy metal elements into the mix, with influences from thrash metal bands like Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, and Forbidden. Scott Stapp's powerful baritone vocals and the band's anthemic sound immediately connected with audiences. Despite only peaking at number 22 on the Billboard 200, strong radio airplay propelled the album to commercial success, eventually selling over 6 million copies in the United States.
This black vinyl LP pressing brings the raw energy of Creed's breakthrough to the format it deserves. With little MTV exposure, media coverage, or label support, My Own Prison sold extremely well, moving over six million copies and achieving sextuple platinum certification. The album's themes of self-identity, questioning faith, and personal struggle resonated deeply with rock audiences in the late 1990s. This 25th anniversary edition captures the thundering guitar riffs and emotional intensity that made Creed one of the era's most successful rock acts.
