Recorded in late 1958 and early 1959 at Reeves Sound Studios in New York, Chet is among the most quietly commanding albums in the Riverside catalog. Produced by Orrin Keepnews and originally released in March 1959, the all-instrumental set brings together an exceptional ensemble including Bill Evans, Herbie Mann, Pepper Adams, Kenny Burrell, and Paul Chambers, with Baker leading nine jazz standards in an intimate, ballad-focused mood.
Baker's trumpet here is a study in restraint. "Alone Together" sets the tone with Pepper Adams delivering one of the session's finest moments on baritone sax. "It Never Entered My Mind" pairs Baker with Kenny Burrell in a reading as hushed as anything in the cool jazz canon, and "September Song" offers an equally moving duet between the two.
This 2021 Craft Recordings reissue was cut from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI. The stereo mix offers a natural spatial presentation that suits the intimacy of these sessions perfectly.
