Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else pairs his alto saxophone with Miles Davis on trumpet in a quintet completed by pianist Hank Jones, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Art Blakey. Recorded during Adderley's time in Davis' group, the session gives both horn players substantial room to state melodies, trade ideas, and shape solos. This Blue Note Essentials vinyl record edition revisits Adderley's sole Blue Note album on a standard weight black vinyl LP.

The opening "Autumn Leaves" develops from a restrained statement of the standard into extended solos from Davis and Adderley, while "Love for Sale" moves at a livelier pace and latin flavor with the horns working over Cole Porter's melody. The title track uses a blues-based theme and call-and-response exchanges between trumpet and alto saxophone. "One for Daddy-O" brings a firmer groove from Sam Jones and Art Blakey, with Hank Jones supplying piano figures beneath the horn lines and Blakey adding crisp accents behind the soloists.

The album stands apart in Adderley's catalog as his only Blue Note leader date and as one of the rare post-1955 sessions with Miles Davis appearing as a sideman. Producer Alfred Lion brought the quintet together for five tracks that combine standards with two pieces tied directly to the session's personnel. The Blue Note Essentials edition is mastered from high-resolution digital sources.
