Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band achieved their commercial peak with Against The Wind, released in February 1980 on Capitol Records. The album became Seger's only number one album to date, spending six weeks atop the Billboard chart and knocking Pink Floyd's The Wall from the top spot. Recorded over a two-year period at Criteria Studios in Miami, Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama, and Bayshore Studios in Coconut Grove, the album was co-produced by Seger with Punch Andrews and Bill Szymczyk. This remastered vinyl pressing marks the first time the album has been remastered specifically for vinyl, pressed on 150-gram black vinyl with fully restored original artwork.
The 10-track collection alternates between reflective, mid-tempo ballads and energetic rockers, showcasing Seger's dual strengths. The title track "Against The Wind" features backing vocals from Eagles co-frontman Glenn Frey and draws from Seger's high school cross country running days as a metaphor for growing older and maintaining integrity. "Fire Lake" aims to recapture youthful, carefree feelings with harmonies from Frey, Don Henley, and Timothy Schmit, while "You'll Accomp'ny Me" delivers a tender acoustic ballad that reached the Top 20. The rockers hold their own, particularly "Her Strut" with its indelible guitar riff from Drew Abbott and "The Horizontal Bop" featuring Alto Reed's saxophone work. About half the tracks feature the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, while the Silver Bullet Band anchors the rest, creating a balanced sonic palette throughout.
This remastered 150-gram pressing delivers enhanced clarity and warmth to the album's layered production. The vinyl captures Paul Harris's distinctive piano work on the title track, the interplay between acoustic and electric guitars, and the full range of Seger's powerful vocals. The LP includes a printed inner sleeve with lyrics, credits, and band photos, housed in a picture sleeve featuring the Grammy Award-winning package design by Capitol Records art director Roy Kohara.
