Five days stranded in Hong Kong after a canceled festival became Blur's creative catalyst. The Magic Whip debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart in 2015, marking Blur's sixth consecutive UK chart-topper and first album in 12 years. The album was certified Gold by the BPI and received critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone calling it "a dark, seductive set that cements a legacy." Recorded at Hong Kong's Avon Studios in 2013 and completed with producer Stephen Street in London, the album reunited the original lineup of Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James, and Dave Rowntree.
"Lonesome Street" opens with sweeping drama, while "Go Out" and "Ong Ong" channel Hong Kong's urban energy. "Ghost Ship" builds atmospheric tension, and "Thought I Was A Spaceman" soars with guitars and strings. "My Terracotta Heart" and "There Are Too Many of Us" showcase the band's mature songwriting. Albarn drew lyrical inspiration from his Hong Kong travels, creating urban reflections far removed from Blur's Britpop roots.
This 10th anniversary edition features gold colored vinyl with alternate cover art by original designer Tony Hung housed in a gatefold sleeve. The new artwork reimagines the iconic ice cream cone as an upturned broadcast tower with gold foil and embossed details, inspired by Chinese 'lai see' lucky money envelopes. Half-speed mastered for enhanced audio quality, this limited edition captures Blur's triumphant comeback.
