Originally released September 11, 1995, The Great Escape captured the spirit of Britpop at its peak and marked a defining moment in Blur's career. The album was the band's second consecutive number one on the UK Albums Chart and was certified triple platinum in the UK in less than a year. Selling over 125,000 copies in its first week and going on to achieve triple platinum status in the UK with over 900,000 sales to date, the album arrived during the height of Britpop fever. This December 2025 30th anniversary edition is a special half speed mastered, double-disc, colored vinyl pressing, beautifully housed in all-new artwork by visual artist and designer Tony Hung. The set includes one yellow vinyl LP and one blue vinyl LP in a gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves.
Where Blur's breakthrough album Parklife was a celebration of the working class, The Great Escape concentrates on the suburbs, featuring a cast of characters all trying to cope with the numbing pressures of modern life. The album continued the band's run of hit singles, with "Country House," "The Universal," "Stereotypes," and "Charmless Man" reaching the top 10 of the UK singles chart. "Country House" was Blur's first song to reach number one, beating Oasis' "Roll with It" in a high-profile chart rivalry dubbed "the Battle of Britpop." Disc 1, pressed on yellow vinyl, contains the full original album, while Disc 2, pressed on turquoise blue vinyl, includes a selection of rare B-sides from the album era, including some which are previously unreleased on vinyl. The music bristles with invention throughout, as Blur delves deeper into experimentation with synthesizers, horns, and strings, while guitarist Graham Coxon twists out unusual chords and lead lines, and Damon Albarn spits out unexpected lyrical couplets filled with wit and venomous intelligence in each song.
The album defined mid-1990s Britain, both the optimism and the underlying malaise, and ultimately became the record that placed Blur at the heart of one of the most talked-about moments in music history. This half speed mastered 30th anniversary pressing delivers enhanced sonic clarity to an album that remains essential listening. The album is often considered the final installment of a trio of Britpop albums released by Blur in the mid-1990s, after Modern Life Is Rubbish and Parklife. The gatefold jacket features Tony Hung's striking new artwork, while printed inner sleeves preserve the complete package. With singles that have combined UK sales of over 1.8 million, more than 60 million YouTube views, and combined global streams exceeding 335 million, this anniversary edition honors an album that continues to resonate three decades later.
