Damon Albarn predicted in 1990 that Blur's third album would make them the quintessential English band of the '90s. He was right. Released April 25, 1994, Parklife debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and stayed on the chart for 90 weeks, earning 4x Platinum certification from the BPI. The album sold over a million copies in the UK, making it Blur's best-selling studio album. Parklife won four BRIT Awards in 1995 including Best British Album, and was later commemorated on a UK postage stamp by the Royal Mail.
Recorded at Maison Rouge Studios with producer Stephen Street, Parklife blends indie rock, Britpop, and satirical observations of British working-class life. The disco-influenced "Girls & Boys" reached number 5 in the UK, while the title track featured actor Phil Daniels. Other singles included the orchestral "To the End" featuring Stereolab's Lætitia Sadier and the reflective "End of a Century." Tracks span genres from synth-pop and waltz to punk rock and new wave, with Albarn drawing inspiration from Martin Amis' novel London Fields to create vivid character studies.
This special edition 2LP features 180g black vinyl housed in a gatefold jacket. Parklife came to define the emerging Britpop scene alongside Oasis's Definitely Maybe and formed the backbone of the Cool Britannia movement.
