Black Sabbath's fourth studio album marked a creative turning point when it arrived in September 1972, becoming the band's first release without producer Rodger Bain. Guitarist Tony Iommi assumed production duties, recording the 10-track collection while the band was deeply immersed in drug use at a Bel Air mansion owned by DuPont heir John du Pont. The album achieved gold certification in less than a month and reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart and number 13 on the Billboard 200.

The album showcases the band's heaviest material alongside unexpected experimentation. "Supernaut" and "Snowblind" deliver crushing riffs and doom-laden atmospheres, while "Changes" features Ozzy Osbourne on piano with a Mellotron-driven ballad that stands as one of their most un-Sabbath-like compositions. "Wheels of Confusion" opens with an eight-minute progressive structure, and the brief instrumental "Laguna Sunrise" incorporates classical guitar and strings. "Tomorrow's Dream" was released as a single but failed to chart.

This 180-gram black vinyl pressing features a gatefold jacket. Rolling Stone ranked the album 14th on their 2017 list of the 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time, while it appeared at number 48 on Guitar World's 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time.
