Billy Joel turns his Los Angeles piano-bar years into Piano Man, the Columbia album that introduced his storytelling voice to a wider audience. The title track uses named barroom characters and a singalong chorus, while "The Ballad Of Billy The Kid" and "Captain Jack" widen the LP from working musician stories into Western myth and suburban frustration. This black vinyl record reissue presents the original ten-song album program as a single LP.

"Travelin' Prayer" opens with quick country-gospel momentum, using banjo-like drive and fast vocal phrasing before the album turns toward character writing. "Piano Man" slows the pace into a waltz built around harmonica, piano, and the regulars at the bar.
