Danny Elfman provides one of his most quintessentially Elfman-esque scores for one of Tim Burton's most quintessentially Burton-esque movies, Beetlejuice. The film's dark yet sardonically funny "Main Titles" is among Elfman's all-time best moments, bustling along with a dark joie de vivre (or is it joie de morte?) that defines the spooky fun of both this movie and his collaboration with Burton. The Beetlejuice soundtrack, first released in 1988, features most of the score (written and arranged by Danny Elfman) from the film. This 2015 vinyl reissue captures the whimsical orchestrations that brought Tim Burton's twisted vision of the afterlife to musical life, with 20 tracks spanning Elfman's imaginative cues and two iconic Harry Belafonte songs that became synonymous with the film.
The score's stylized world includes the ironically perky "Travel Music," "Incantation" (a tensely percussive cue that unfolds into exaggerated brass and ghostly vocals and organs), and the eerily pretty but still whimsical "Lydia Discovers". Standout moments include "Enter... 'The Family' / Sand Worm Planet," "Beetle-Snake," and "The Wedding," showcasing Elfman's gift for blending horror and humor through music. The soundtrack also features two Harry Belafonte songs which appeared in the film: "Day-O" (The Banana Boat Song) and "Jump in Line (Shake, Shake Senora)", which provide perfectly absurd counterpoints to Elfman's gothic orchestrations. The tip-toeing pizzicato strings and pianos, and the theatrical brass, organs, harps, and percussion that appear on every track underline the film's live-action cartoonishness.
This 2015 Geffen Records reissue was recorded, mixed, and mastered digitally, preserving the full dynamic range of Elfman's orchestral arrangements on black vinyl. A perfect mix of silliness and spookiness, Beetlejuice remains one of Elfman's most consistent scores. The vinyl format brings warmth to the theatrical orchestrations while maintaining the crisp clarity needed for Elfman's rapid-fire musical shifts and intricate layering.
