Beach House widened the scope of their dream pop on Teen Dream, pairing Victoria Legrand's commanding vocals and keyboards with Alex Scally's layered guitar work and steady rhythmic patterns. Recorded with producer Chris Coady at Dreamland Studios in New York, the album marked the duo's first full-length release for Sub Pop and a major step beyond their earlier records.

"Zebra" opens with a circling guitar figure and a chorus that rises around Legrand's repeated vocal line. "Norway" uses clipped rhythm, organ, and sliding guitar phrases, while "Silver Soul" moves more slowly through layered keyboards and a persistent drum pattern. "10 Mile Stereo" builds from a restrained opening into one of the album's largest choruses, with live drums pushing it forward, and "Take Care" closes the sequence with a repeated promise carried by organ, guitar, and Legrand's sustained vocal.

The songs examine desire, uncertainty, memory, and the emotional distance between people, often through short phrases that gain meaning through repetition. Legrand and Scally wrote and arranged the album as Beach House, with live drums and percussion adding weight to the duo's established keyboard and guitar foundation.
