American Football's self-titled debut album was released in 1999 on Polyvinyl Records and recorded at Private Studios in Urbana, Illinois. The trio of Mike Kinsella on vocals and guitar, Steve Holmes on guitar, and Steve Lamos on drums created what would become one of the most influential albums in the Midwest emo canon. The album was made "literally in the last four days" before two out of three band members had to move back home from college, resulting in nine tracks that balance math rock's intricate guitar interplay with deeply introspective lyrics about young adulthood and heartbreak. The band split shortly after release, with members assuming the album would fade into obscurity. Instead, it quietly became a cult classic, eventually crashing Polyvinyl's website when a deluxe reissue was announced in 2014. The album's iconic cover photograph of a house in Urbana has become synonymous with Midwest emo, and the record is now considered a cornerstone of the genre's evolution.

The album opens with "Never Meant," which has been called the "ultimate Midwest emo anthem" with its shimmering guitars and shifting time signatures. "The Summer Ends" follows with delicate arpeggios and Kinsella's vulnerable vocal delivery, while "Honestly?" showcases the band's jazz influences through unconventional rhythmic structures. "For Sure" and "But the Regrets Are Killing Me" demonstrate the trio's ability to create tension and release through intricate instrumental passages. "Stay Home" offers one of the album's most emotionally direct moments, and the closer "The One With The Wurlitzer" features Holmes on Wurlitzer piano, adding textural depth to the band's already rich sonic palette. Throughout these nine songs, the interplay between Holmes and Kinsella's guitars creates cascading melodies that feel both mathematically precise and emotionally raw.

This limited edition blue smoke vinyl pressing delivers the album's delicate production with warmth and clarity. The colored vinyl adds visual appeal while maintaining sound quality that captures the intricacies of the band's interlocking guitar work and Lamos's precise drumming. The package includes a printed lyric insert, allowing listeners to follow Kinsella's poetic and often cryptic observations about relationships and loneliness. This pressing makes one of emo's most essential albums available in a distinctive format that honors the cult status the record has achieved in the decades since its release.
