Alabama Shakes - I Must Be Dreaming [Indie Daydream Yellow]

Alabama Shakes push beyond the blues-rock foundation of their earlier work on I Must Be Dreaming, their first album in more than a decade. Produced by the band with collaborator Shawn Everett and recorded at Sound Emporium Studios and Blackbird Studio in Nashville, the 11-song set moves deeper into psychedelic soul, funk, rock, and layered vocal arrangements. This Indie Exclusive vinyl LP is pressed on limited Daydream Yellow vinyl and includes a poster.

"Another Life" moves from an atmospheric R&B groove into psych-rock, with Brittany Howard's vocal rising alongside guitar as the arrangement opens up. "Garden" leans into Southern soul with a softer pulse and a prominent piano interlude, while "I Feel Hope Coming" uses layered, childlike harmonies to support its brighter tone. "American Dream" takes the opposite route, pairing a slow, heavy psychedelic groove and creeping bass line with Howard's protest lyric about political, economic, and environmental strain.

The album broadens Alabama Shakes' palette with flute, harpsichord, sitar, piano, and layered voices with guitar, bass, and drums. Rather than returning to the retro-soul approach of their debut, the group develops the exploratory direction of Sound & Color, moving through psychedelic passages, funk rhythms, Southern soul, and rock as Howard shifts between falsetto and full-throated vocals.
